Best Practice Infokit: The Transition from 2D Drawing to 3D Building Information Modelling

CAD has been around now for many years, and the computer workstation has become as much a part of our workspace as the drawing board ever was. Currently, designs are conceived in 3D, documented in a 2D format, and then constructed in a 3D world as interpreted from the 2D drawings. However, the building industry is quickly finding that 2D CAD has become about as efficient as it can be, and must now harness the power of the computer and do more than just mimic drafting.

WM Design are one of a growing number of architectural consultants who have successfully managed the transition from 2D Drawing to a 3D Building Information Modelling approach. We have prepared an Infokit which includes an interview with Adrian Williamson, founding partner of WM Design, an overview of one of their projects, and an animated explanation of the 3D Building Information Modelling process. During his interview Adrian shares his experiences, advice and details the specific benefits this approach brings to his practice.

What are the wide-ranging benefits of a 3D Building Information Modelling approach?

  • Effectively communicate your ideas using a model-based 3D presentation so Clients can understand concepts easily and Client confidence is gained at an early stage.

  • The model then evolves with the development of the design from the conceptual stage through to completion of the project.

  • Any changes made to any section, elevation or plan are automatically applied throughout the model in real-time – so no more checking and counter checking is required and accuracy is increased dramatically.

  • The same model can be used for generating interior and exterior renderings, 2D extractions for construction drawings, and for generating reports and schedules. These can be shared seemlessly with consultants and then the returned files can be applied back to the model.

  • All resulting in more time for you to spend designing great buildings!
